Dent to Armathwaite, UK
55 miles, 3,652 feet of climbing
We began the day with the most difficult climb of the tour - a five-mile climb containing a steep half-mile section with grades averaging 17%. As is goes, it started raining hard just as I was reaching the crest of the climb, which made the otherwise enjoyable descent down the other side slick, chilly and a tad harrowing, as my brakes don't work all that well in the rain. The rain eventually stopped and it actually turned out to be a really nice day - cool, partly cloudy with a nice tailwind. After the initial big climb, we encountered some steep rollers here and there, but all-in-all, the remainder of the ride was relatively easy and fun. We arrived in Armathwaite early in the afternoon, and had plenty of time to clean up our bikes (even if it only rains for fifteen minutes, the bikes get dirty). We stayed at the Fox and Pheasant - a beautiful old rustic guest house. We ate dinner as a group in the house's pub, which resembled an old English castle room. Tomorrow, we head to Scotland!

Heading toward the climb - yeah, it's gonna rain, it's just a matter of when. |
