New Mexico: Land of Enchantment and Steep Climbs

Day 9
Monday, September 21, 12015
Socorro, NM to Ruidoso, NM
105 miles
6,503 feet of climbing

Let me just start off by saying New Mexico is a beautiful state.  The landscape is so unique and varied, there is always a gorgeous view before your eyes.  The higher you go, the more spectacular the view.  Most normal people would simply drive a car to see the views, a thought that occurred to me as I struggled up a particularly steep section of one of today's climbs.  But we're bike riders, not normal people, which is a good thing.  So, suffice it to say, there was a great deal of climbing on our route today - some of it steep - but, it certainly was worth it.  Partially cloudy skies today kept the temperature comfortable, but allowed enough sunlight to illuminate the scenery.  What an awesome day!

Elevation profile of today's ride.  (I will be scheduling my knee replacement surgery as soon as I finish this tour.)

The road ahead
Summitting one of today's climbs
Approaching one of the climbs
Riding through lava fields

Twisty-turny and steep.  Storm clouds are brewing, but we all finished before the rain started.
Truck on cheese!
A fun descent!
