Day 13

Amarillo, TX to Shamrock, TX
92 miles
1,060 feet of climbing
Best and easiest day on the bike so far! Ninety-two pleasant miles on flat to rolling terrain, bright, sunny skies . . . and a tailwind! I don't think it gets any better than that, does it? We finished the ride just before 2:00 p.m. Finishing the day's ride early means more rest and recovery for the legs (and sit bones), which is a very good thing on a tour like this with no days off. There were some cool sights on our route today. We saw the largest cross in the western hemisphere (Groom, Texas). We visited the Devil's Rope Museum - a Route 66 historical museum (McLean, Texas). Today we rode most of our route on historical Route 66, which was really neat. . .. and sort of bumpy. I think I hit every single historical bump. Most of us ate dinner at Vern's Steakhouse - essentially, the only dining establishment in Shamrock, Texas. But it was very good and the waitstaff (as well as the other patrons) couldn't have been nicer as our group descended on the restaurant, turning an otherwise quite Friday evening into a feeding frenzy. But we had a great time, and a great day. Time to rest!
