Springerville, AZ to Socorro, NM
154 miles
4,691 feet of climbing
Today was our longest day in the saddle - 154 miles, which took me just over 9 hours, not including rest stops and lunch. I'm very tired now, so I will list a few highlights of the day and then let the pictures speak for themselves.
Highlights of today's ride -
- We saw an elk!
- We crossed into New Mexico at mile 14 - the third state of our tour!
- Mallomars at the rest stops today!
- Headwind all day (boo), but not as bad as yesterday's
- We crossed the Continental Divide!
- We rode through Pie Town! (Fellow rider Gerry G. did stop for a piece of pie.)
- Nice 14-mile downhill at the end of the ride - took us right into Socorro!
Elevation profile of today's ride |
Because of today's long mileage, we had an early start - 6 a.m. The sun was still coming up. |

The road to Pie Town |
This was not even the high point of today's ride. We got up to 8,100 feet! |
The landscape changed as we rode |
Yeah, baby! Fourteen-mile downhill! But, because of the headwind, we still had to work for it. Nevertheless, it was awesome! |
