A Short but Spectacular Ride to West Yellowstone

Friday, September 5, 2014
Day 4 - Ennis, Montana to West Yellowstone, Montana
72 miles
3,300 ft. of climbing

Today's ride was the most scenic of the tour so far.  As we rode out of Ennis this morning, we were again greeted with frigid temperatures - 41 degrees, but sunny and not much wind.  Our route today consisted of a gradual climb all the way to West Yellowstone, with a few long rolling hills toward the end.  So, although the total mileage for the day was only 72, it wasn't necessarily a "quick" ride due to (a) the climbing, (b) stopping so many times to take pictures of the magnificent scenery, (c) a stretch of road construction with loose gravel for several miles, and (d) my flat tire at mile 13.  But it was nice to have a shorter, more relaxed day where you could spend more time stopping at each and every photo opp.  Mountains, creeks and lakes - the scenery got more spectacular as we rode.  The area is a very popular spot for fishing, and we saw many fishermen out on the water.  We finished today's ride around 2 p.m., which left us plenty of time to explore downtown West Yellowstone and have a relaxing afternoon.  Tomorrow is a scheduled rest day, and so we get to spend the day in West Yellowstone.  We plan to spend the day visiting Yellowstone Park and maybe do some hiking.  Although I will miss riding my bike tomorrow, I think my sit bones will appreciate a day off the bicycle seat!
